I’m Britta Ekholm, a clinically licensed therapist based in the Kansas City area.

I have always loved putting myself in someone else’s shoes and seeing the world through their eyes. As a therapist, I do that very thing with my clients. I seek to understand your world view and find creative ways to heal the parts of you that are hurting.

I work with people with a wide array of issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, addiction, grief, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. I have experience in various levels of care, including hospitalization, psychiatric residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient treatment. I help my clients learn how to handle intense emotions, reduce problem behaviors, and replace negative thoughts with more helpful thoughts.

My background.

I obtained my undergraduate degree in psychology from Kansas State University and my graduate degree in substance abuse and clinical counseling from East Carolina University.

I worked for 2 years in an eating disorder partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient clinic and 3 years in community mental health setting. I began my private practice in 2020 and have loved serving clients and helping them attain a life worth living. I am EMDR certified, and enjoy using EMDR to help individuals recover from trauma and PTSD, including childhood abuse, neglect, and abandonment. I specialize in treating trauma, binge eating disorder, grief after the suicide of a loved one, anxiety, and depression.

I use a variety of evidence based therapies to help individuals heal, including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

My therapeutic approach.

My practice is grounded in a person-centered approach, which means my main goal is meeting your needs. I ensure you feel seen, heard, and understood every session. Research shows the best predictor of effective therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. A good therapeutic relationship includes having an emotional bond of trust, caring, and respect; agreement on the goals of therapy; and collaboration on the "work" or tasks of the treatment.

In therapy, I will walk with you in bettering yourself and overcoming your struggles by developing healthy coping skills and challenging unhelpful beliefs about yourself. I use a non-judgmental, collaborative approach to create a safe space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Partnering together for our therapeutic relationship is a step toward your growth. I will help you get unstuck and reduce your struggling. I provide a free phone consultation to ensure that we are a good fit for each other.
